This mural was painted on a temporary facade protecting the new storefronts of the historic Leamington Building while they were under construction on the corner of Franklin st. And 19th St. in Oakland, California. The original paintings have since been removed. The mural wrapped around two sides of the building and then continued across the storefronts of the Leamington Florist, Lotus Falafel, and Modern Coffee for a total length of over 160 feet. The subject matter of classic 1930’s style airplanes is a nod to the history of the building. The Leamington used to be home to the offices of Amelia Earhart, and was the last place she was seen before her fateful disappearance in 1937. I did an illustration to scale and then used it as the basis of the final painting, which I painted by hand with brushes and house paint.
